OPEN SCIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

AT EGU25

The EGU General Assembly 2025 programme featured a strong emphasis on Open Science across its scientific sessions, courses, townhalls and networking events with sessions on FAIR data, open workflows, reproducibility, and open-source tools. ESA’s EarthCODE, APEx, and EOEPCA+ were key examples, supporting collaboration and transparency in Earth and space science research.

ESA'S SCIENCE HUB JOINS THE EarthCARE HACKATHON

The ESA Science Hub is actively participating in the WCRP Global Kilometer-Scale Hackathon 2025, a pioneering global event focused on advancing high-resolution Earth system modeling. The hackathon - happening from 12 to 16 May, brings together scientists, coders and climate experts. The Science Hub Team is focusing on the utilization of the observations from the new Earth Explorer mission EarthCARE.

Biomass - the forest mission is now in space

On 29 April, ESA successfully launched its seventh Earth explorer mission, Biomass, aboard a Vega-C rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. Biomass will deliver open-access data critical for understanding the state of the world's forests and gaining new insights into the global carbon cycle. This is made possible by its onboard L-band fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar. The mission's operational phase is expected to begin by January 2026. Data will be made available through the Multi-Mission Algorithm and Analysis Platform (Biomass MAAP). This platform offers users co-located access to data, processing tools, and algorithms, providing a powerful environment for research and analysis.
