Highlights

THE AEROSOL-CLOUD ALLIANCE

The European Space Agency and the

European Commission are coordinating a major research effort to reduce climate prediction uncertainty related to aerosol–cloud interactions. Through the

Aerosol-Cloud Alliance, more than 220 scientists from nearly 40 institutions are collaborating across the projects: AIRSENSE, CERTAINTY, and

CleanCloud, integrating satellite observations, modelling, and data analysis to improve understanding of how aerosols influence clouds and near-term climate forecasts.

ESA SCIENCE HUB CHALLENGES 2026 SELECTION RESULTS

The 2026 ESA Science Hub Challenges selected five European universities to collaborate with ESA scientists on EO research. Students from the University of Geneva, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Politecnico di Milano, TU Wien, and Ruhr University Bochum will participate in two workshops in 2026: Urban environments and Atmospheric Extremes (in September), and Vegetation under Climate extremes (in November), while learning FAIR and open science practices.

CUBES & CLOUDS MOOC DEBUTS AT UNIVERSITY OF WüRZBURG

From 9–13 February 2026, EAGLE Master students at the University of Würzburg participated in MOOC Cubes & Clouds – Cloud-Native Open Data Science for Earth Observation. The course covered cloud computing, EOCollege, and JupyterHub, guiding students through hands-on exercises and interactive discussions on Earth Observation workflows. Participants explored key concepts such as data cubes, EO cloud platforms, and open science, gaining practical experience in cloud-native EO processing.

Clustering Mediterranean Ocean Water Types: ESA Science Hub Challenge 2025 Results

A newly published community-led story by students from Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, the National Oceanography Centre, and the British Antarctic Survey presents results from the 2025 European Space Agency Science Hub Challenge. The story is now featured on the ESA–NASA–JAXA EO Dashboard. Using multi-parameter satellite datasets, including chlorophyll-a, sea surface temperature, sea level anomalies, and wind, the students applied unsupervised machine learning to cluster ocean water types in the Mediterranean Sea. The analysis identified coastal, eutrophic, and oligotrophic waters and revealed their spatial distribution and seasonal dynamics, demonstrating how Earth Observation and data science can support marine ecosystem monitoring and climate research.

SMART-CH4 Dataset Now Published via EarthCODE

The ESA SMART-CH4 project has published a comprehensive δ¹³C(CH₄) dataset via the EarthCODE portal. Praised for its transparency and robust GitHub-based workflow, the dataset provides monthly gridded isotopic signatures for five methane sectors, namely: Agricultural & Waste (AGW), Fossil Fuel & Geological (FFG), Biomass Burning (BB), Natural non-wetland (NAT), and Wetlands (WET). The dataset has a resolution of 1°×1° spanning from 1998 to 2022. It is registered with a DOI.
