AMPLI: A NEW OPEN DATASET FOR ICE SHEET ELEVATION

A new Altimeter data Modelling and Processing for Land Ice (AMPLI) dataset and scientific paper are now available. The AMPLI dataset was generated following a new processing chain that retrieves ice sheet topography along the Sentinel-3 track over Antarctica and Greenland. Access the dataset on EarthCODE and learn more about the ESA-funded project and the publication.

JOIN ESA EarthCODE 101 WORKSHOP AT FOSS4G

On 15 July, ESA will host a hands-on EarthCODE 101 workshop in Sarajevo, at the FOSS4G Europe Mostar 2025. During the 4-hour workshop, participants will learn how to access EO data, create reproducible experiments, and publish FAIR workflows using platforms like Pangeo and EDC. The workshop promotes Open Science practices and community collaboration in Earth System Science.

WORKSHOP

BIG DATA FOUNDATIONS FOR EO TAINING COURSE

This five-day course, taking place in Riga, Latvia from 22 to 26 September, offers a foundational exploration of the technologies, workflows and business applications shaping the Earth observation landscape. The course provides a practical springboard for participants attending the BiDS conference the following week. Applications open until 15 July 2025.

Nighttime light data is 'shedding light' on human activity patterns

Nighttime light datasets on the EO Dashboard reveals global patterns of human activity. Using data from the Suomi NPP satellite, researchers track urbanization, energy use, and socio-economic change across urban and rural areas. A recent study led by Prof. Bumpei Tojo (Tokyo University of Foreign Studies) leveraged these datasets to show COVID-19’s impact on nighttime light intensity revealing variations in socio-economic activities. To support open science a reproducible Notebook was developed enabling users to visualize trend analysis in infrastructure, electrification, and disaster response.
